Our Story & Heritage

Where Heritage Meets Modern

“Situated in an old Harbour Masters building, we are passionate about vibrant modern cafe fare & friendly service in the South.”

The Origins

A Living Piece of Dunedin History.

Heritage Coffee was born out of a profound love for two things: Dunedin’s extraordinary Victorian architectural heritage, and the modern Southern culture of gathering over exceptional food and coffee.

In the late 19th century, Dunedin was the financial and mercantile capital of New Zealand. The Otago Harbour hummed with trading schooners, steamships, and merchants. Right here in the Warehouse Precinct, goods from across the globe were logged, stored, and distributed.

“With a great team, come and enjoy some of the best Cafe fare & friendly service in the South.”

Architectural Character

The Harbour Master’s Building.

Occupying 110 Vogel Street, our cafe sits inside the iconic former Harbour Master’s building. Its crisp white facade, classical pediments, and dramatic tall arched windows reflect the grand civic ambitions of colonial Dunedin.

Rather than covering over its storied past, our restoration honors every layer:

  • Tall Arched Windows: Hand-hewn timber frames flood our dining room with natural morning light.
  • Exposed Red Brick: Original kilned bricks left exposed to reveal the textured warmth of historic masonry.
  • Emerald Geometric Tiles: A modern architectural accent behind our walnut espresso counter, echoing maritime green tones.
  • Deep Burgundy Wainscoting: Preserving the classical exterior colour scheme that defines Dunedin’s historic streetscapes.

Guiding Values

Good Coffee. Good Food. Good Company.

Three simple tenets form the heartbeat of Heritage Coffee every single day.

01. Dedicated Craft

We treat coffee as a craft that honors both the bean origin and the barista’s hand. Dialing in our grinders every morning ensures every pour-over and flat white expresses pristine clarity and depth.

02. Vibrant Seasonality

Our kitchen believes food should be wholesome, colourful, and freshly prepared. We partner with local Otago suppliers, free-range farmers, and regional millers to create honest cafe fare for modern tastes.

03. Genuine Hospitality

Southern hospitality is unpretentious and warm. Whether you are stepping in for a quick morning takeaway or staying three hours with a book, our team greets you as family and makes you feel right at home.
